Throughout July and August, Magnum Boots ran a competition with NZ Landscaper
Magazine to kit out one lucky landscaper in a brand-new pair of work boots
The winner was Bush Doctor owner Luke Webber, who (literally) walked away with a mean pair of black leather Magnum Site Max boots.
Luke, who is based in Hawke’s Bay, says he found out about the competition when he picked up a copy of NZ Landscaper from Midlands Horticulture.
As a softscaper, Luke frequently works in muddy areas and says he was stoked when he found out he was the competition winner!
“The boots are really cool and I’m very grateful,” says Luke. “It was a Friday when I found out that I’d won. I'd just finished planting some trees when I looked at my emails. It made my week!”
The Site Max boot is 100% waterproof and features a MAG-DRY bootie membrane, which ensures landscapers stay dry in the wettest conditions. Crafted from durable full-grain leather, the boot includes a YKK® side zipper for easy access and a high-traction slip-resistant outsole (SRC) for stability on slippery surfaces.
MAKING HIS MARKNow self-employed after close to a decade in the trade, Luke did his apprenticeship with Hawke’s Bay native John Godwin and is fully qualified with a Level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Amenity Horticulture from Primary ITO.
“John taught me the ropes when it comes to landscaping, and I also learned a lot from a part-time nursery job with Plant Hawke’s Bay,” he explains.
“I’ve been on my own for just over a year and I’m really pleased with how things are going. This spring has been busy. I do a mixture of garden maintenance and softscaping, such as planting, weeding and hedging.”
Like a lot of other landscapers, weeding isn’t his favourite job “but it helps pay the bills.”
Luke’s passion and skill lies in jobs that require a bit more of a detailed touch.
“I reckon I do a pretty mean hedge, and I always find planting fun and rewarding. I like laying Readylawn too!”
Luke says he’s been landscaping for 12 years because he loves the outdoors and working in varied locations around Hawke’s Bay – and is in it for the long haul! And now, thanks to Magnum, so are his boots!
